Awarding one of the richest purses among literary magazines, the John Steinbeck Award for Fiction recognizes exceptional works with a prize of $1,000! Contest submissions must respect the 5,000 word count limit. The reading fee for this contest is $20 per submission.


NONFICTION

Awarding an annual prize of $1,333, the Gabriele Rico Challenge for Nonfiction recognizes outstanding works of nonfiction of up to 5,000 words. The reading fee for this contest is $20 per submission.


POETRY

Writers are welcome to submit up to five poems per submission.

  • submit up to five poems in a single document or PDF
  • number pages
  • provide a brief bio
  • make sure your Submittable profile is up-to-date 

Poets may compete for the Edwin Markham Prize for Poetry, which awards $1,000. The reading fee for this contest is $20 for each submission of up to five poems. 

 

ART

Art submissions may include up to five pieces of art, including photography.

Please be sure to:

  • include your name, address, phone number, and email address on the first page
  • articulate the details of the medium, including any modifications made to photos
  • ensure submissions are rendered in an easily accessible format such as .jpg
  • provide a brief bio
  • make sure your Submittable profile is up-to-date 

Artists may compete for the Mary Blair Award for Art, which awards $1,000. The fee for contest submissions is $20. Contestants are also encouraged to provide a link to their digital portfolio.

Non-contest art submissions will be considered for pages within the journal. We especially enjoy works in black and white. Non-contest color works may be featured as space permits, and on our website. Reed 152 is an open-themed issue.

Reed Magazine, California’s oldest literary journal, is looking to publish the young voices of the South Bay. No matter your medium, the staff at Reed Magazine wants to hear your stories. Submit your poetry, fiction, nonfiction, or visual art to Issue 152, and let your voice be heard. $100 cash prize.

Submission Guidelines:

This contest is for San José high school students only.

Please attach your submission as a Word document, or PDF if you are submitting visual art.

Submissions must be no more than 2,000 words in standard MLA format.

Include your first and last name and the name of your high school.

One submission per student.

The deadline is December 15, 2018.

There is no theme to which submissions must adhere.
